20-21 Charlotte Square, Edinburgh

Situated on the west side of Charlotte Square in Edinburgh’s New Town, we have reimagined and rejuvenated Robert Adam’s Category A listed Georgian buildings by linking and extending townhouses 20 and 21 to create sophisticated and spacious double-townhouse office accommodation.

With a client requirement for additional and varied floorspace and a market shift towards ESG and wellbeing, we designed a floating landscaped deck, removing the carparking below and delicately landing contemporary ‘pavilions’ on and below the new deck to the rear of No 20.  The new two storey contemporary volumes with dark grey standing seam zinc facades and green roofs provided the opportunity for auditoria which allow occupants to spill out from upper levels onto surrounding landscaped gardens. This new architecture not only repositioned the buildings as interesting and dynamic workplaces but also delivered a much more appealing rear outlook and space for tenants to enjoy.

The interiors have been radically enhanced with repair and reinstatement of damaged and missing cornicing, fireplaces and other period features with high quality finishes and fixtures throughout.  An interior palate of lush plant tones, has created a vibrant environment with well-connected office space, luxurious amenities, and a cycle storage.
