Nestled above the bustling Royal Mile, the dusty attic space above Code Hostels, was uninhabited and ripe for development by our client. The space that housed the water tank and an original Crossley Engine, one of only 3 original left in the world, and second oldest in Europe. Built in 1878, the engine was used to regulate the temperature of the Edinburgh Police Chambers. The discovery, restoration & relocation of the engine to ‘The Lost
Close’ was featured in a documentary titled ‘Potential Energy’ and is also open to the public to view.

A challenging space with coombed roof structure, we managed to create 8 bespoke bedrooms and ensuites, employing 4 rich colour palettes, along with dark rustic timber cladding, resulting in atmospheric hotel rooms with amazing views of St Giles Cathedral and the Crags and Old College to the south.
